Best-Selling Author Visits NEISD Campuses
Submitted By Christie Hurst
During the week of September 25-29, bestselling author Adam Gidwitz visited five NEISD middle schools, dazzling students with his storytelling talents and inspiring young writers through special advanced writing workshops. The hosting schools included Tejeda, Bush, Hill, Lopez, and Bradley Middle Schools.
Students from each campus prepared for Mr. Gidwitz’s visit by listening to read-alouds presented by their reading teachers or by reading library-provided copies of “A Tale Dark and Grimm” themselves, the author’s first book in the Grimm series. At Bush Middle School, students eagerly began each day of Reading Class by listening to the OverDrive audiobook version of “A Tale Dark and Grimm,” while book club students at Bradley Middle School read and discussed Mr. Gidwitz’s most recent book, “The Inquisitor’s Tale,” as their first book of the year.
Mr. Gidwitz’s interactive storytelling and passion for writing captivated capacity-filled libraries. During his presentations to each school, he retold his own humorous versions of the traditional Brothers Grimm fairy tales, engaging students through audience participation combined with entertaining delivery. Each discussion ended with plenty of time for a question-and-answer session. The writing workshops focused on what makes a story great, from choosing a sympathetic heroine or hero to adding relevant challenges and problems, and always adding a dash of humor without overdoing it.
The Twig Book Shop also visited the campuses during Mr. Gidwitz’s presentations, providing on-site sales, while Mr. Gidwitz personalized copies and chatted informally with students. Staff and students alike were thrilled to have the opportunity to purchase books personalized and autographed by the author.
“The best part of the day was seeing the thrill on the students faces when they opened up the book to see their name and a special note signed by Adam Gidwitz,” said Mrs. Hirst, Bush Middle School Librarian.
Across all the campus visits, students remarked that Mr. Gidwitz was their favorite author visit they’ve ever experienced. Students overwhelmingly loved Mr. Gidwitz and eagerly anticipate his next book! NEISD middle schools can’t wait until he can come back and share his new stories with the school community again!
