Bill Brown Elementary students were in full checkmate mode at the Comal ISD Chess Tournament in February. The campus won first-place trophies in the grades K-2 and 3-5 divisions. The following Bill Brown students won individual trophies in their age group: Brayden McElroy (4th place, grades 3-5), Seth Permenter (11th place, grades 3-5), Cade Spradling (10th place, grades 3-5) and Luke Schroeder (1st place, grades 3-5), Zeus Engrav (3rd place, grades K-2), Jack Schroeder (2nd place, grades K-2), and Tessa Schroeder (1st place, grades K-2).

In other Comal ISD news, Students and advisors from the Family and Consumer Sciences Department at Smithson Valley High School attended the Region V FCCLA (Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America) STAR Events and leadership conference in Corpus Christi in February. These students competed in various categories where participates are tested in their understanding and achievement in chapter and individual projects, leadership skills, and career preparation. Advancing to the State FCCLA STAR Events and Leadership Conference in Dallas in April are SVHS students: Ava Weissgarber (Fashion Construction), Halie Siepert (Fashion Design), Shelby Hedgpeth (Interior Design) and the team of Madelyn Hornburg and Hope Schievelbein (Hospitality & Tourism). Their SVHS teachers are Shauna Douglass and Tina Olcott.

Finally, five Smithson Valley High School NJROTC cadets were presented with scholarship checks totaling $742,000 on March 27 by Petty Officer First Class Steven Camacho. Congratulations Asia Sanders, Kami Matthews, Logan Marraro, Joseph Miller, and Lucas Stewart.
