1,500 Comal ISD Seniors Toss Caps During Graduation

Comal Independent School District celebrated the accomplishments of nearly 1,500 seniors this year during graduation week June 1-3.

Comal Academy, the district’s self-paced campus, started the pomp and circumstance on June 1, in the Smithson Valley High School Performing Arts Center. At that time about 70 seniors received their diplomas.

Approximately 50 Memorial Early College High School with St. Philip’s College students graduated at Canyon High School Performing Arts Center stage on June 2. Alan Martinez was the Valedictorian and Jacob Lane was the Salutatorian.

Saturday, June 3 was the big day as Canyon, Smithson Valley and Canyon Lake high schools all conducted graduation ceremonies at Strahan Coliseum at Texas State University-San Marcos.

Canyon High saw about 570 seniors cross the stage.  At Smithson Valley High, approximately 560 seniors received their diplomas. Canyon Lake High completed the festivities when approximately 210 seniors earned the right to throw their graduation caps high into the air.

Smithson Valley High School’s 2017 Valedictorian was Jared Pauletti and Megan Harris was Salutatorian. At Canyon High, Sophie Machalec was the Class of 2017 Valedictorian and David Churchwell was the Salutatorian. Canyon Lake High School had Co-Valedictorians, Erica Colston and Sydney Young.

“This is always a great time of year and a week we all look forward to,” said Andrew Kim, superintendent. “This is the close of one chapter in the lives of our graduating seniors, but we’re definitely excited to see what the future holds for everyone who’s worked so hard to get here.”
