Comal Reads: District Launches Family Literacy Project
Submitted By Jason Gordon
Beginning October 30, Comal ISD elementary campuses are embarking on an exciting family literacy project called Comal Reads.
During this three-week event, families are encouraged to read the Newbery-award winning book “The One and Only Ivan” by Katherine Applegate.
“Research confirms that literacy activities in the home contribute not only to reading and math success, but also to developing a life-long love of reading,” said Ronessa McDonald, Director of Curriculum. “We hope you join us in this district-wide effort.”
Superintendent Andrew Kim agrees that reading together as a family is an important part of the learning process.
“When parents take the initiative and take the time to read with their children it can make all the difference in the world,” Kim said. “Just 30 minutes to an hour per night away from the television or video games dedicated to reading would make a big change in the academic life of any child.”
