The Johnson High School Cheerleaders and their mascot, JJ, recently attended a UCA camp at Texas A&M University to officially kickoff the 2018-19 season. During the camp, the cheerleaders honed their cheer and stunting skills, learned new dances/routines, increased team bonding, explored new ways to increase school spirit, and performed in several evaluations and competitions throughout the week. JJ the mascot attended his own separate camp with other team mascots focused on learning how to stay hydrated, field walks, break dance class, and props. After all their hard work and practice throughout the week at camp, every school performed the rally routine, the band dance, and game day sideline routine for overall awards in the Game Day competition.
“Everyone worked very hard this summer,” said Johnson Cheer Coach Shannon Wylie. “It’s not easy to learn as much as they did in the time they had. I’m very proud of their accomplishments and their hard work paid off in the end.”
At awards, the Varsity Cheerleaders won first place in both sideline and rally routine. They also won fourth place in timeout cheer and third place overall in Game Day. The Freshmen Cheerleaders won first place in sideline and rally routine. The mascot, JJ, also won Game Day champion.
Nine Johnson High School cheerleaders and JJ were selected as All-American cheerleaders: Gabby Blanchard, Lindsey Turner, Bella Wildeman, Briana Foster, Abby Wiliford, Taylor Prigmore, Kaci Cooper, Maddie Rutter, Ella Wisely, and Skyler Blackburne. In addition, all five seniors were extended an invitation to tryout for UCA staff.
Congratulations to the Johnson High School Cheerleaders and mascot for a highly successful kickoff to the 2018-19 season!
