Founded in 1993, the League of Women Voters of the Comal Area (LWV-CA) will celebrate 25 years of defending democracy and empowering voters by participating in National Voter Registration Day on Tuesday, September 25, 2018. LWV volunteers will join thousands from other nonpartisan organizations to register new voters and assist others in updating their registrations nationwide.
National Voter Registration Day was launched in 2012 and is endorsed by the National Association of Secretaries of State and the National Association of State Election Directors.
“If you are interested in registering voters, we need you,” said Robin Engel, LWV-CA Voter Services Co-chair.
In 2017, National Voter Registration Day surpassed expectations both locally and nationally. Without presidential or congressional elections, and despite rain, LWV-CA registered or updated registrations for 90 citizens, most of them students registering to vote for the first time. Nationally, close to 3,000 partners participated, registering or updating registrations for 125,000 citizens.
“Shining the spotlight on voter registration on a single day is an effective way to engage the community,” said Roxanna Deane, LWV-CA president.
Last year, four high schools and two libraries joined the effort at the Comal County Election Office. Twenty volunteers donated 42 hours in addition to getting their DVR training and certification.
Training to become a deputy voter registrar will be held at 10 a.m. the third Tuesday of each month at the Comal County Elections Center and on the second Wednesday of each month at 3 p.m. at the Guadalupe County Elections Office. For Comal County call (830) 221-1352 and for Guadalupe County call (830) 303-6363 to sign up or for more information.
The League of Women Voters is a nonpartisan political organization that encourages the informed and active participation in government and influences public policy through education and advocacy. LWV never supports or opposes candidates for office, or political parties.
